We have received such a lot of positive feed back about the addition of our news letters, especially the introductions of fellow boaters. It seems we all like to know who out there enjoys the same hobby. We have decided to leave the news letters on the website for all to read and enjoy so we will send out a note to say when that months letter is available but there is no longer any need to register.

Someone recently said things must be quite hard for us as most New Zealanders shop overseas. We did find that a bit amusing because 60% of our sales are packaged and freighted across the seas. However we did stop to wonder about his statement. The most obvious reason would be because these days you can shop globally getting the product you want at the best possible prices and no matter where you ordered it from it will be on your doorstep within a week. It could of course be that it is easier to shop on the internet from the comfort of your own home then to go out in the rain comparing items. Although there does not seem to be a clear answer, one thing is for sure shopping on line is not exclusive to the Kiwi's. A customer came into the shop when TNT courier was picking up a number of orders and said 'you  guys must really be proud' 'Of what' we asked. 'That a company here in New Zealand is sending so much stuff overseas' We did not have to wonder about his statement because he was right we are proud!

Thanks to Mark Copley in the UK for sending us these two great pictures of his Offshore boats.

This is his 57" Giant Apache with a CMB 90 racing in Bristol docks in the UK, he won the 30 minute Race, non stop.

And this is his Challenger 43" with a Rossi .21  which is his National "AA" winning boat. He has Won that class for the last 3 seasons.

What is OMRA? It is the Offshore Model Racing Association found in the UK  There are two types of OMRA championship races, the timed 'chase boat' event and the side by side racing of the endurance races

1)An Endurance Race involves racing side by side against some 15 other similar powered boats  around a 300 - 400 yard circuit for a total of 40 minutes. The races are run in the British sea They are usually run as two 20 minute heats around a large course, which is usually a rectangle and is always raced clockwise.

  2) Chase boat races are held on the open sea and the boat is run on a five to ten mile course while being controled from a following speedboat. There is a time limit for the course set by the race organiser, usually around 30 minutes. You will be travelling at 30-40 mph over  some pretty rough water for some 20 minutes.
Sounds like a fun way to race.

Hakanoa Club News from Steve Trott

Hi All,

Well several of us, tried our luck with the weather last Sunday, as it turned out it wasn't so bad, no rain and just a persistent westerly breeze that gusted a bit now and again.
Its a good measure to know at what level we can operate in, we were just on the verge of it being too rough, except for offshore boats, if we had that wind from any other direction except the west we would have been going home !!
At least that will help us to make the call in future whether or not to call off a club day.

Anyway, onto some good stuff, we had some more faces from the past arrive, Birmy Korving and Bob Gutsell, while only there to observe and help out this time, next time they are bringing boats - so they tell me....
We also had Leon Jacobs who hadn't made it over before and another two newbies in the form of Glen Osborne and Alan Watson ...

The numbers are continuing to swell which is fantastic, more the better !! We continue to stick at this stage to a fun based format where those with problems have the time and get the help required to get things sorted with out being under pressure, along with the opportunity to run in some mock races with the countdown start to get some good practice.

Next Club Day is September 2nd, hopefully the weather will have improved another few clicks and we will get a great turn out, don't forget, if the weather is looking marginal, check your email before you leave for the lake Sunday morning, if a cancellation is required it will be sent out by 7.30 am, OR phone me on 0275706737 or Dean on 0274488247. If you are not on our email list please contact me at sktrott@xtra.co.nz

We also have on the 15th & 16th September the 2nd round of the NZMPBA Hi Point Hydrofest series, we will need some volunteers to help out with setting up the venue on Friday afternoon ( 14th ) and of course helpers for all the normal chores over the weekend... entry forms will be out in Propshaft very soon or are available from me, just call !!

Please see attached the up to date frequency list, please check it to see if you have any clashes, ideally we would like to see every one on separate frequencies, if you are affected by a clash, have a yak to who ever you clash with and try to sort out a suitable outcome

Anyway, a big thanks to Dean H for bringing his rescue boat, motor and buoys, also the Kockott's for bringing the spares and things we all need when running boats.

Kim will individually be emailing you all with all of the potential club names, please take a moment to reply and have a say on your favorite, we will announce the favored name at next club day.....

That's about it from me, don't forget if you have anything you want made known to everyone, let me know, it might be a wanted to buy or sell or maybe just some advice required..

Tip of the day, when you finish running for the day, get some standard 4:1 methanol fuel and squirt it through the cooling system till it runs clear at the other end, then blow excess out, the methanol flushing thru will absorb any water and then a light oily film will be left on all the water jackets and fittings so they don't corrode or get that slimy growth thing happening.

Happy boating...

Steve Trott  ( TUI ) ps, yes more nick names are on the way !!

  INTRODUCING PAUL LINDBERG

Q.  When did you first get into model boats

A. I have been boating for approx 25 years ago..

Q.What do you enjoy most about the hobby

A.I enjoy building the boats, engine modifications and most of all the fun on race days.

This Black and gold  boat with the JPS sticker has a four stroke engine in it. The engine was made by my Dad in 1948, he melted down some old car pistons and poured it into carved wooden moulds and then machined it. The valves are car valves turned down and the size of the head of the valve would approx be the size of a 1cent piece. It is 20cc in size.  My father never got around to finishing the carby so I fitted a OS carby to it. It has points ignition out of a model A Ford and the spark plug in the photo is a Ederson plug.  I run it on glow plug ignition and the last time I ran it in Aussie Rod Smith had an exhaust pulse tacometre and it was going 10500 RPM.  Not bad for 60 odd years old.

Q.What was your first boat and did you build it your self

A.My first boat was one that my Dad built in approx in the late 40s it has a 2.5 ED diesel water cooled engine. I removed the old radio control gear that my Dad fitted. It was a valve operated radio control and used a lot of batteries. I fitted a JR radio control and took it to lake in Petrie Queensland, Australia. I still have the boat.

Q.How many boats have you have built and bought since then

A.I would say 12-15 boats. I can't say how many I have bought because what my wife doesn't know won't hurt her and I like being married.

The 3 boats in the photo are my three twins. The blue and white boat with champion sticker has twin 40 OS Engines. The Black Cat (Black Betty) has twin 90 CMB and the Deep V boat with the red top has twin 90 Rossi's.

Q.You used to boat in Australia what is the biggest difference between there and here besides the weather

A.In Australia we don't seem to have so much politics. Those guys seem to want to just race and have a good time.  With a few beers after the meeting.  Everyone was welcome. Some of the silly rules over here that are different to the rest of the world, I don't agree with. We should be uniform with Aussie and the USA.  So if we want to go there and race nothing is different.

Q.How often do you get to go racing

A. With my commitment to speedway for some 25 years limited my time on the water. I would say approx. 8 times a year back then.

Q.What club do you belong to

A.I am a member of the NZMPBA and also of the Manukau Club

Q.How many classes do you race in.

A. In about 6 classes

Q.Do you think you will be going to the Worlds event in Australia in January 2008

A.It is my intention to go with Max and Dan Rogers.  I feel it would be a good opportunity for young Dan to gain some experience.

Q.What was your most memorable racing event

A.I enjoyed racing with Rod Smith in Aussie and also was very proud of Dan Rogers progress in his racing in the past 12 months.

THANKS PAUL

Paul's present project has 4 x 81 OS VRM

PERFORMANCE PROJECTS in progress

GORDON HAY'S AEROMARINE CYCLONE

Thanks to Gordon Hay from Adelaide who sent us these great photo's allowing us to follow his Project in Progress of the Aeromarine Cyclone.

After the Aeromarine Cyclone hull and Hardware package arrives in  Adelaide from HPM Gordon lays everything out before starting the enjoyable task of getting stuck in. He prefers to take his time as he likes to do things properly.

The Aeromarine Cyclone's profile

Gordon has decided on a highly modified Zenoah G260PUM for his engine and wanted the best Hardware package to compliment his choice. The package consists of the Aeromarine wedge rudder & strutt assembly, water outlets, bulkhead fittings, EZ locks etc. Aeromarine radio box and accessories, Aeromarine fuel tank tray with Sullivan 24oz Tank, Coopers Tuned Pipe and Coopers wrap to centre header and manifold. Speedmaster flexi cable and Speedmaster motor mount
