We are on
to our second News Letter and are pleased to see it has been
received with enthusiasm. It seems that everyone enjoyed meeting
Paul Osmond a fellow boater from Oz. As getting to know each
other world wide is one of the main objectives, this month we are
introducing a Kiwi, Graham Doggett to our overseas friends. We are
also adding monthly features like CMB News, Information on NAVIGA,
A Club Calendar where anyone is welcome to add there event dates
to the list. This will enable anyone going on holiday or someone
just wanting to attend race meetings at another club the
information to do so. Anyway once again we hope you enjoy this
months edition and welcome any criticisms, news or suggestions you
may have..

represented as part of the World Wide Organisation and
also to able send a team to the World Championships.
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Every two years Naviga invites a country to host the World

INTRODUCING GRAHAM DOGGETT
|
|
When
we were contemplating the prospect of immigrating to New
Zealand, one of the most important things on our check list
was whether or not there were any Power Boat Clubs. Sure
enough after a web search, up came the Manukau Model Power
Boat Club. For a couple of years we kept quite a close look at
the events held at Wattle Downs and Graham Doggett's
name was prominent at the events and regatta's that we read
about. |

QUESTION 1. How
did you first get into model boats?
ANSWER I've always loved building things,
including all sorts of models from plastic kit sets to own
designs from wood.
Although I have spent my entire
working life in the motor industry, and have built a couple of
racing sports cars, my main hobby has however always been
boats.My first models
were electric scale model boats but because I am a petrol head
I found them too slow, so when I moved to Auckland 30 years
ago and discovered a club racing model power boats I was
hooked. QUESTION 2
.What appeals to you most about the hobby?
ANSWER I just love messing about with
boats and swapping ideas and information with others who have
the same interest.
Until recently it was almost
impossible to buy a RTR boat that had any sort of reasonable
performance, so most were partly scratch built with
combinations of bought and home made parts with no two boats
being the same. This results in some interesting and original
designs with equally interesting characters who have built
them. |
| |
| |
QUESTION 3. Did
you start off by building your own boats or did you use RTR's?
ANSWER I must be showing my age, because
when I started there were no RTR boats, not in this country
anyway.
On my first boats I made almost
everything including struts, rudders, driveshafts, and exhaust
systems, and the hulls were made from plywood.
QUESTION 4. If so when did you build your
first boat and what type was it?
ANSWER My first boat was a Fairey
Huntsman cabin cruiser built from Vic Smeed plans imported
from England. I think it was about 2 feet (600mm) long and
built mainly from balsa wood. It had a pathetic electric motor
and used torch batteries for power. No radio control because I
couldn't afford it still being at school.
|
|
|
| |
|
|
|
 |
QUESTION 5. How
many boats do you think you have built since then?
ANSWER At a quick count it must be at
least 25 boats. That doesn't include 4 that are still work in
progress.
QUESTION 6. I know you enjoy a cross
section of rc boating so what types have you built?
ANSWER 3 x hydros - electric, nitro
and gas.
8 x Offshore cats - electric
nitro and gas.
8 x Deep V's - electric nitro
and gas.
1 x 1 metre yacht.
About 5 scale boats including
cabin cruisers and I tug boat.
There may be some others that were
failures and are best to remain forgotten. |

QUESTION7.
What has been your most challenging project?
ANSWER Designing and building my Eurocat
hull.
Because I couldn't find or afford
a big offshore cat that I really liked I decided to design and
build my own. I didn't realise just how much work this would
involve.After much
research the original hull was built from fiberglass and
plywood and then a mould was taken from it so that we could
produce others in fiberglass.
The hull shape is a semi scale
model of Victory 1 which was the reigning UIM offshore world
champion and I just had to have a model of that fantastic race
boat.
I am currently racing the
latest version of this hull as Miss Longlite in offshore
events with a Zenoah 260 as power.

QUESTION 8. What club do you belong to?
ANSWER I belong to the Manukau Model
Power Boat Club ( MMPBC) and the Scale Unlimited Hydroplane
Association (SUHA) and am currently president of both.
QUESTION 9. How
often do you attend races?
ANSWER Our club meets on the 2nd and 4th
Sunday of the month with organised racing on those days. I am
usually racing or helping to organise races on those days.
QUESTION 10. What class do you enjoy
racing the most?
ANSWER Without a doubt I prefer
offshore/endurance races. Sprint racing is fast and fun, but I
enjoy longer races where a bit of race strategy is required
and the need for staying out of trouble, staying right side up
and finishing with the most laps.
QUESTION 11.
What is your most memorable event?
ANSWER The most memorable event recently
must be the Trans Tasman Challenge that was held for the first
time in Brisbane in October last year. This was an electric
only regatta which will now be held annually alternating
between Brisbane and Auckland. We let the Aussies win last
year to lull them in to a false sense of security so that we
can waste them next time on our home turf.
