After a serious slump, model power boating appears to be on the
uptake. More people are getting into the hobby and the modeling
industry in New Zealand is expanding and offering more marine
products than ever before. Competition in any form is a good thing
as it adds
interest and a challenge to the hobby. However competition and
challenge are irrelevant without a friendly and social side
creating an enjoyable atmosphere. Our aim with these News Letters is to
cover all these aspects by having interesting articles on our
performance products as well as local and international events.
We will also be
introducing people we have met over the years around the world
so as boaters we can get to know one another. There will also be
tips and information and some unbeatable
VIP Specials. |
|
We hope
you enjoy receiving it and welcome any criticisms, news or
suggestions you may have.

After the success of the
Thunder Down Under regatta held over the Easter weekend, discussions
started about using Hakanoa Lake as a permanent venue and there were
several people all very keen to get a club
going. Steve Trott,
who we can thank for the TDU suggested a start date of the 6th
May. I counted 20 people at the
initial meeting all keen to see a friendly, varied club get going.
The club will run casually for a couple of months so boaters who
enjoy the speed of the petrol boats, the skill of Multi boats and
the excitement of out riggers can bring their boats and join in. |

Meetings will be on the 1st Sunday of every month.
A couple of reasons for this is so it complies wth the
NZMPBA'S policy of club days and also so there will not be a clash with
any other clubs in the area.
This enables anyone interested to get extra time on the water or dust off
their multi boats and riggers and get them back on water. Contact Steve Trott at

INTRODUCING PAUL OsMOND
|
|
Designer of
the Taipan hydro and person behind Competition Hydro Designs
|
 |
|
We met Paul
Osmond at the World Champs in Norway last year. He along with
Roger and Sarah Brooks were representing Australia. We
were the minority groups so we spent a lot of time together.
Paul did very well at the Championships and got into the
finals. His Competition Hydro's attracted a lot of attention
and several of the competitors in Europe ordered some from
him. As we have always been keen to get into Hydro racing Tony is in the process of
building the 21 and 45 Taipan Hydro. Paul is very active in Australian
model boating and belongs to the New South Whales Model Boat
Club in Sydney. He can also be found on several boating
Forums. We hope you enjoy getting to know him and can now put
a face to the discussions he is involved in. |
|
|
|
| Q.
Hi Paul tell us how you got started in model boating
A.
How did I get started in model boating well it started back in
1975 when I bought my first magazine I think it was Flying
Models I started reading about the scale model hydroplanes
that the Americans were racing and thought” wouldn’t that be
a great thing to build” but not having any building skills it
took another 15 years before I built my first scale hydroplane
but in the mean time I actually started building planes and
learnt to fly.
Building and flying all sorts of aircraft took up most of my
spare time in 1985 after a short break from flying I thought
I’d do a little boat racing for a change and began building
and racing multi boats and then outboard tunnels after a
couple years I bought my first rigger which was a Hughie and
a K&B 3.5 after that I built and raced all sorts of model
boats.
In 1992 I took a break from model boating and started racing
cars this lasted for 6 years in 1998 I went to Penrith sky
park in Sydney to watch the NSW state champs and was instantly
hooked back into boat racing and that’s what I've been doing
ever since.
Q.
What do you enjoy most about model boating?
A.
The thing I enjoy the most would have to be sharing good times
with my friends and talking about the development of new
technologies and this is why I travel to as many different
race meetings as I can.
|
 |
|
|
|
 |
Q.
How many model boats do you think you have built? a. for
yourself and b. for others
A.
I have built for myself since 1998
may be 25 to 30 boats that
includes a number of prototypes. Boats for other people! Well I
suppose there would have to be in excess of 50 and that
includes customers in Europe, England, America, New Zealand
and here at home in Australia.
|
| |
|
|
|
Q.
What do you enjoy most about your job designing and building
the Taipan
A.
At first it was the satisfaction of being able to build and
race a successful boat but now it is seeing someone else build
and race my boats and win.
Q.
What are some of the challengers you have faced since starting
Competition Hydro Designs?
A.
Probably the biggest challenge was acceptance by the racing
community.
Q.
What are you most proud of achieving with the Taipan.
A.
I would have to say that it was watching Sara Brookes except
her gold medal at the last World Championships having raced
with her Taipan
Q.
How often do you get to attend races
A.
At least once a month
Q.
What classes do you race in
A.
I have competed in many different class such as A, B, C, X and
Gas Hydros A, B, and GAS mono, and more recently Electric
hydro
|
 |
|
Paul was proud when Sara Brookes received
her Gold Medal |
|
|
|
| |

Steve Tomvald's Taipan Hydro was seen in action at the recent
Thunder Down Under. |
|
Q.
What club do you belong to?
A. New South Wales
Model Boat Club. Australia
Q.
You attended the world championships, was this your first
time?
A. No my first WC was 2004 Slovenia then 2006 Norway
Q.
What did you enjoy most about going
A.
The best part about going to the WC was meeting new people,
making new friends and catching up with some old friends. O
and the racing was the best.
Q.
Will you be going again in 2008
A.
Yes provided I can save the necessary funds.
Well thanks I enjoyed our little chat!
Yes, thanks Paul, me too.
